Music in Kiev
Kiev loves music. Many bars and clubs regularly feature live performances, street musicians are seen everywhere, and people often whistle or hum a tune while performing their everyday chores. If you too love music and are on the prowl for a place to listen to some good tunes and have some fun, here are a few addresses that sure to strike a chord.
A club with a long and excellent live music reputation is certainly Art Club 44. Every night at 10 pm the stage opens for well or lesser known singers-songwriters and bands, which cover a variety of genres, including electronic, jazz, rock, reggae, and many more.
Two of Kiev's Irish Pubs live up to their Celtic tradition and offer live stage sets every night — the Golden Gate Irish Pub and O'Brien's. The atmosphere is always cheerful and you're certain have a very good time once you've set a foot in those bars.
The Caribbean Club is the only place in Kiev where you can enjoy live salsa music. Good bands and professional dancers do their best to animate the crowd and are almost always successful. Swing and Jazz Do It KIEV are two jazz bars that sport very good live jazz sets every night. Additional bars with live music are Dakota, the Porter Pub chain, Docker's ABC and Docker Pub.
Of course, a city like Kiev also disposes of several music houses and concert halls. Classical music and jazz are particularly well represented. The Taras Shevchenko National Opera House, the National Philharmonic House, the National Operetta Theatre, the Music Academy of Ukraine, the International Centre for Culture and Arts, The House of Scientists and the Municipal Opera and Ballet Theatre for Children are only a brief selection of classical music venues in Kiev. Contemporary music concerts can be enjoyed at the Freedom Concert Hall, the Ukraine Palace Concert Hall, the Centre for Culture and Arts of National Aviation University, and the Chaika Air Field.
Music is also an important part of many of the various festivals and celebrations that are held in Kiev throughout the year. Traditional choirs sing on the streets on Kiev Day, marching bands hold parades on Victory Day and numerous concerts, big and small, take place on Independence Day.
The city hosts some pretty impressive international music festivals as well. The Vladimir Horowitz Competition is held at the Philharmonic House. Every year in spring, young pianists from all over the world play in memory of the famous Russian pianist. Jazz in Kiev is a three-day jazz festival with the participation of world class jazz artist like Grammy award winner Al Jarreau. Workshops and master classes complete the stage program. Kyiv Summer Music Evenings are a series of chamber concerts that take place at the Mariyinsky Park. Every summer, many great free concerts are organized at the beautifully situated Summer Concert Hall. Finally, there is Kraina Mriy, an ethnic and world music festival with folklore, folk dancing, traditional entertainment, workshops, and literary stages. This colorful fest usually takes place on a weekend in June.
