Kiev in Summer

Kiev is simply beautiful in Summer! Everything is lush and green, which is especially the case in the many of the city's parks and gardens. Situated directly on the banks of the Dnieper River, the Kreschaty Park surrounds the Water Museum of Kiev. With record temperatures measured at nearly 40 °C (104 °F), days can be quite hot in Kiev. So on a hot summer day, what sounds more refreshing than a day all about water?

Not far from the Kreschaty Park, also on the Dnieper, you'll find the Mariyinsky Park where you can visit the Mriyinsky Palace. A palace built after the image of Louis XIV's Versailles in France. You can then indulge in a boat cruise on the Dnieper. Probably one of the nicest things you can do on a hot day. With sprays of cool water on your skin, you can admire the impressive skyline of the metropolis and appreciate the overwhelmingly beautiful and idyllic landscape that form the steep, green slopes of the riverside.

For dinner or lunch you can sit on the summer terrace of the Kureni restaurant specializing in all kinds of grilled dishes – exactly what you want on a mild and silky summer evening.

Although not located on the seaside, kiev sports some quite nice beaches. Dytyachy in Hydropark, Chortoriy in Druzhby Narodiv Park (both on the Dnieper) and Veselka on Veselka Lake are the only three beaches where you are officially allowed to swim in the water. All the other places where you might encounter people swimming are labelled riverside recreational zone. If you decide to take a dive in these waters, it's at your own risk.

Finally, a historical highlight of summer is the Independence Day of Ukraine. On August 24, all ukrainians celebrate their independence from the Soviet Union with street music, concerts, folklore, and plenty of activities for both adults and children. The official ceremony is usually closed with spectacular fireworks, which doesn't mean that the party comes to an end, though. Parties go on in every restaurant, bar, and club until the early morning .

The summer of 2012 will have something very special for all visitors of Kiev: the EURO 2012. This European soccer championship will be hosted by both Poland and Ukraine. The final will take place in Kiev's Olympic Stadium on July 1. A huge fan zone will occupy the city center and 6 large screens will provide live feeds from all events. Every bar and all public places will probably show all matches, so be sure to experience the buzz surrounding this outstanding sporting event!
